Patricia Caruana is a graphic designer, visual storyteller, and brand strategist whose work speaks with clarity, intention, and heart. Based in Annapolis, Maryland, Patricia has spent over a decade honing a minimalist style rooted in strong typography and purposeful messaging. As founder of Caruana Creative, her independent design studio, she partners with brands to uncover their authentic voice through strategic, inclusive design thinking.
Her journey began at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), where a love of craft and storytelling shaped her early aesthetic. Before launching her own studio, Patricia held key roles at Redline Creative and VitalRoot Health & Wellness, where she led national campaigns and brand transformations. Beyond client work, she is deeply committed to community mentorship and supporting nonprofits through pro bono design.
From Childhood Creativity to Career Calling Growing up in Baltimore’s creative suburbs, Patricia’s childhood was steeped in artistry. “My father was a woodworker, and my mother loved calligraphy,” she recalls. “Artistic expression was always encouraged.” Early exposure to both craftsmanship and digital design planted the seeds for a lifelong passion. By high school, Patricia was already designing event posters — not just to create beauty, but to craft messages that truly connect.
Launching Caruana Creative: A Leap Toward Intimacy and Strategy After years at agencies managing large-scale campaigns, Patricia craved a closer, more intentional creative process. “Starting Caruana Creative was a natural progression,” she explains. “I wanted to dive deeper into design strategy and client collaboration.” Her studio remains intentionally small to nurture genuine partnerships, allowing her to truly understand each brand’s vision and values. Unlike fast-paced agency environments, Caruana Creative focuses on lasting design systems that are both beautiful and strategically sound.
Designing with Inclusivity at the Core Inclusivity is not an afterthought but the foundation of Patricia’s work. “Whether it’s color contrast for accessibility, gender-neutral imagery, or multilingual layouts, I always consider diverse audiences,” she says. A pivotal project at MICA on visual accessibility in public transit signage opened her eyes to how design can either include or exclude. Since then, breaking down barriers through thoughtful design has become a guiding principle.
Adapting Across Industries From wellness brands to tech startups, Patricia’s approach begins with research — understanding markets, audiences, and what makes each brand unique. VitalRoot Health & Wellness called for organic, soothing visuals that build trust, while tech clients require sleek, modern designs that communicate innovation. Her role is to translate brand values into visuals that resonate within their specific ecosystems.
Technology as a Creative Ally Over the years, technology has revolutionized Patricia’s workflow. While Photoshop and Illustrator were once staples, platforms like Figma, Sketch, and Webflow now enable real-time collaboration and rapid prototyping. Project management tools like Trello and Asana help keep everything on track. Yet, she maintains that great design always begins with pen and paper — sketching ideas out first to preserve clarity and intent.
A Career Highlight: VitalRoot’s Transformative Rebrand One of Patricia’s proudest achievements was leading VitalRoot’s full rebrand, including product packaging, digital campaigns, and their first e-commerce website. “Seeing the brand grow from regional to national recognition was incredibly rewarding,” she shares. It demonstrated the power of strategic, thoughtful design to drive real business growth.
Balancing Timelessness and Trends Staying relevant without succumbing to fleeting trends is a delicate art. Patricia balances clean lines, strong typography, and purposeful color with a keen eye on industry shifts. “I selectively incorporate trends that align with a brand’s identity,” she notes. “Too much trend-chasing risks becoming dated; too little risks feeling out of touch.”
Collaborative Partnerships with Clients Patricia views clients as partners in a transparent, communicative process. Frequent check-ins ensure alignment from discovery through execution. “That transparency builds trust and leads to work we’re both proud of,” she affirms.
